"Japanese Filmmaker Ryûsuke Hamaguchi to Premiere Two New Films at Prestigious Film Festivals in Venice and Ghent"

News - 18 August 2023

Following his remarkable success on the international stage in 2021, movie enthusiasts have been eagerly anticipating new projects from Japanese filmmaker Ryûsuke Hamaguchi. With two Oscar nominations under his belt, it comes as no surprise that the prestigious Venice Film Festival, the oldest festival in the world after Cannes, will host the world premiere of his latest film "Evil Does Not Exist." However, our neighbors to the south also have a significant world premiere of their own.

Alongside the premiere of "Evil Does Not Exist" in the main competition at the Venice Film Festival, Film Fest Ghent, the largest film festival in Belgium, has managed to secure writer/director Hamaguchi and composer Eiko Ishibashi for the premiere of "Gift," a film that approaches similar themes and scenarios in a different manner. This screening in Belgium will be enhanced by the presence of both Hamaguchi and Ishibashi, with the latter performing the score live during the world premiere on October 18, 2023. This presents a wonderful opportunity for attendees to dust off their tuxedos and gala dresses and make the journey to Flanders for this special event.

Hamaguchi is likely to be a strong contender for numerous film awards with his two new works, including a potential second Oscar, but for now, audiences can enjoy his latest masterpiece "Drive My Car," which is available for streaming on the Pathé Thuis platform.
