Land of the Dead: A Zombie Classic with a Connection to Shaun of the Dead

News - 11 January 2024

In 2005, George A. Romero's Land of the Dead marked the fourth installment in his iconic Night of the Living Dead franchise. This zombie-filled film series served as a significant source of inspiration and was even referenced in Edgar Wright's Shaun of the Dead.

Interestingly, there is a unique connection between the two films - Shaun of the Dead was released in 2004, a year before Land of the Dead, which pays homage to the Night of the Living Dead films. Directed by Wright and written by Wright and Simon Pegg, Shaun of the Dead follows Shaun, a salesman in London who finds himself navigating a zombie apocalypse alongside his friends and loved ones.Set in a world years after the events of Day of the Dead, Land of the Dead takes place in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where survivors have sought refuge.

The city is ruled by Paul Kaufman (played by Dennis Hopper), who wields immense power and control. Amidst this backdrop, Big Daddy (portrayed by Eugene Clark), an intelligent zombie, encourages his fellow undead to wield firearms against human defenses. This leads to a confrontation between the zombies and the human population, resulting in the city's residents being trapped within the confines of an electric fence.

In a fun cameo appearance, Pegg and Wright make an appearance as zombies in Land of the Dead, standing at a photo booth. Romero, a fan of Shaun of the Dead, extended an invitation to the duo to visit the film set. Impressed by their admiration for his work, Romero offered them minor roles in the movie, to which Pegg and Wright eagerly accepted, choosing to portray zombies.

Pegg even turned down a larger role in another film to make this special appearance, emphasizing the importance of paying tribute to those who inspire you.Following Land of the Dead, two additional sequels were released - Diary of the Dead and Survival of the Dead. Although Romero, the creative force behind the franchise, passed away in 2017, plans are in motion for the next film, titled Twilight of the Dead.

Dissatisfied with the direction of the series after Survival of the Dead, Romero had crafted a film treatment alongside co-writer Paolo Zelati, outlining the conclusion of the saga. This storyline delved into the fate of the zombie protagonists from Land of the Dead and depicted a world where humanity was on the brink of extinction. While Romero had begun work on the screenplay, the project was put on hold following his passing.

In April 2021, it was announced that Twilight of the Dead was back in development under the guidance of Suzanne Romero, George's wife. Collaborating with screenwriters Joe Knetter and Robert L. Lucas, Zelati completed the screenplay, ensuring that the film stayed true to Romero's vision.

As for viewing Land of the Dead, featuring the memorable cameo by Pegg and Wright, the film may not be available on popular streaming platforms. However, audiences can enjoy the movie on Amazon Prime Video with Shadowz, experiencing the post-apocalyptic world crafted by George A. Romero and the subtle nod to Shaun of the Dead within the narrative.
