Martin Scorsese's Losing Streak at the Academy Awards Continues with "Killers of the Flower Moon"

News - 12 March 2024

There appears to be a streak of bad luck when it comes to director Martin Scorsese and the Academy Awards. Despite receiving a total of 26 nominations for his last four films, Scorsese has not taken home a single gold statue. This unfortunate trend continued with his latest film, Killers of the Flower Moon, which also failed to win any Oscars.

It's no secret that Scorsese and the Oscars have had a rocky relationship in the past. However, there was a glimmer of hope when his film The Departed swept the 2007 Oscars, winning four awards including Best Picture and Best Director. This success was followed by another win for Hugo in 2011, which took home five Oscars.

Unfortunately, the recent Oscar ceremony brought disappointment once again for Scorsese. Despite securing ten nominations, Killers of the Flower Moon was left empty-handed. This marks the fourth consecutive film by Scorsese, including Gangs of New York and The Irishman, to receive multiple nominations but no wins.

This puts him just shy of tying the record for most nominations without a win, held by The Color Purple and The Turning Point.Despite this recent setback, Scorsese's overall Oscar nomination record remains impressive. Across his 18 films, Scorsese has accumulated a total of 102 nominations and 21 wins.
