Timothée Chalamet's Dream Come True: Working with Christopher Nolan on Interstellar

News - 11 October 2023

Timothée Chalamet, known for his breakout roles in films such as Lady Bird and Call Me By Your Name, is a huge fan of acclaimed filmmaker Christopher Nolan. The actor has professed his admiration for Nolan's work, particularly citing The Dark Knight as one of his favorite films. Chalamet has revealed that Heath Ledger's portrayal of the iconic character, the Joker, served as a significant inspiration for him to pursue a career in acting.

Chalamet's dream of working with Christopher Nolan came true when he was cast in the director's ambitious science fiction epic, Interstellar. In the film, Chalamet plays Tom, the son of Matthew McConaughey's character, Cooper. While the relationship between Cooper and his daughter, Murph, is a central focus of the story, Chalamet's role as Tom is relatively small in comparison.

Despite this, Chalamet was thrilled to be a part of such a high-profile project and to work alongside talented actors such as McConaughey, Jessica Chastain, and Anne Hathaway. However, after watching the film, Chalamet couldn't help but feel disappointed by the limited screen time his character received. In a candid conversation with Emma Stone for Variety's Actors on Actors series, Chalamet admitted to feeling emotional after the premiere of Interstellar.

"I saw the film and thought it was fantastic. But after the premiere, I went home to my father and cried for an hour because my role was so small. I thought I would have more screen time," he shared.

Despite his initial disappointment, Chalamet harbors no ill feelings towards Christopher Nolan or the film itself. He acknowledges that the decision to minimize his character's role ultimately served the greater good of the story. Reflecting on his experience during the promotional tour for Interstellar, Chalamet confessed to feeling like an impostor standing alongside established Hollywood stars, considering the fact that he was only 18 years old and relatively unknown at the time.

Chalamet's admiration for Interstellar and Christopher Nolan's directorial prowess is evident in the fact that he watched the film a total of 12 times in IMAX format. He vividly remembers attending a special screening of the movie hosted by Nolan himself in Lincoln Square, where he found himself surrounded by the grandeur of the film and the presence of his esteemed co-stars. Despite feeling like a newcomer in such illustrious company, Chalamet's passion for storytelling and cinema fueled his desire to carve out a successful career in the industry.

Interstellar, with its compelling storyline about a group of astronauts embarking on a perilous journey through a wormhole in search of a new home for humanity in a distant galaxy, continues to captivate audiences with its breathtaking visuals and thought-provoking themes. The film is available for streaming on HBO Max, allowing viewers to delve into its mesmerizing world and appreciate the performances of its talented ensemble cast, including a young Timothée Chalamet in one of his early forays into the realm of blockbuster filmmaking.
